The historical structure, in which the famous writer lived, turned out to be on the way of the raging elements, but the 72-year-old caretaker Jacques-Sands left him. Instead, ten employees and fifty legendary cats with six fingers on their paws remained in the house. it was the right decision – the stone walls of the building are almost half a meter thick, it is equipped with three autonomous generators and is located at an altitude of more than 5 m above sea level.
The granddaughter of the writer, Mariel Hemingway, called on the caretaker to pick up all the cats and escape from the hurricane.
The building is important, but it’s just real estate, do not take chances. In response, she received a photo from one of the cats, which carefully examines the list with the names of other pets – a “roll call” of all 54 individuals was conducted. Polydactyl creatures, the writer’s favorites, also refused to leave their favorite home.
Hemingway lived in Key West from 1931 to 1940 and more than once experienced the invasion of local hurricanes. The building is perfectly adapted for these purposes, and after the appearance of a whole family of cats, new ones have been added to the standard safety measures. For example, separate entrances and exits only for animals in each room, specially placed bedside tables and chairs, to which cats can climb if the floors are flooded with water. And also the supply of cat food and medicine, just in case. According to legend, since the time of the first six-fingered Snow White, presented to the writer by a fisherman, her descendants are granted special privileges, since they all helped the writer in his creative work.
